Large multiplicity fluctuations and saturation effects in onium collisions
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper studies two related questions in high energy onium-onium scattering: the probability of producing an unusually large number of particles in a collision, where it is found that the cross section for producing a central multiplicity proportional to k should decrease exponentially in √ k. Secondly, the nature of gluon (dipole) evolution when dipole densities become so high that saturation effects due to dipole-dipole interactions become important: measures of saturation are developed to help understand when saturation becomes important, and further information is obtained by exploiting changes of frame, which interchange unitarity and saturation corrections. Gluon multiplicity in coherent diffraction of onium on a heavy nucleus
We derive the cross section for the diffractive gluon production in high energy onium-nucleus collisions that includes the low-x evolution effects in the rapidity interval between the onium and the produced gluon and in the rapidity interval between the gluon and the target nucleus. We analyze our result in two limiting cases: when the onium size is much smaller than the saturation scale and wh...
متن کاملSaturation In Deep Inelastic Scattering
The solution to the BFKL equation grows like a power of center of mass energy, s, violating unitarity conditions at high energies. The growth of the cross section can be tamed by taking into account multiple pomeron exchanges. This is known as saturation and it is expressed in the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation, [6]. Conservation of energy should also slow down the growth of the cross section, and...
متن کاملSaturation Physics in Heavy Ion Collisions
We discuss expectations of saturation physics for various observables in heavy ion collisions. We show how simple saturation-inspired assumptions about particle production in heavy ion collisions lead to Kharzeev-Levin-Nardi model. Comparing this model to RHIC data on particle multiplicities we conclude that saturation effects may play an important role in particle production and dynamics at th...
متن کاملCorrelations and fluctuations in high-energy nuclear collisions.
Nucleon correlations in the target and projectile nuclei are shown to reduce significantly the fluctuations in multiple nucleon-nucleon collisions, total multiplicity and transverse energy in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, in particular for heavy projectile and target. The interplay between cross-section fluctuations, from color transparency and opacity, and nuclear correlations is calculat...
متن کاملFluctuations in Statistical Models
The multiplicity fluctuations of hadrons are studied within the statistical hadron-resonance gas model in the large volume limit. The role of quantum statistics and resonance decay effects are discussed. The microscopic correlator method is used to enforce conservation of three charges – baryon number, electric charge, and strangeness – in the canonical ensemble. In addition, in the micro-canon...
